The assignment called for a package that followed the principles of reduce, reuse, recycle. Each package had to be based on an existing product, and the final product had to be more environmentally friendly compared to the original.
My chosen product was Yves Veggie Burgers, and the original package is heavily reliant on plastic and glue. The branding was also very basic and not eye-catching, using standard food imagery and an unexciting aesthetic. As such, I pushed the design by using bright, eye-catching colours and vibrant illustration. I did not feel that displaying the burger itself in illustrations was necessary- it could be displayed through a cut out so the rest of the imagery could serve a purpose. As for the box design, I knew I could not easily remove the plastic the burgers are encased in for sanitary and health reasons. As such, I knew I instead had to focus on removing excess glue and giving the package a longer usable lifespan.

I created the box entirely in Adobe Illustrator. This includes the layout, illustrations, and typography. All mock-up imagery was produced using Photoshop. The colours of each box were based on the underutilized colours Yves already uses to denote the different burgers. The illustrations were dual purpose: it was aesthetically pleasing and displayed the main ingredients in each burger.

As for the box itself, I make it fully enclosed to remove the glue required to keep the burgers in place. The cutout (the white triangle area) uses no plastic itself- the plastic used for the burgers would serve as a barrier. The box is resealable so that it can be used to store the burgers in their plastic packaging.
